Bike Safety Day on B&A Trail

Cyclists from all over the county are invited to this annual event hosted by the Trailblazers.

Cyclists who use the Baltimore and Annapolis (B&A) Trail will have a chance to catch up on safety techniques at the annual Bicycle Safety Day on June 2, hosted by the Trailblazers.

The volunteer group promotes safe and proper use of the B&A Trail and provides assistance to trail visitors, identifies safety hazards and are considered goodwill ambassadors of the trails.

There will be two "safety zone" locations on the trail on June 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.:

  • The Earleigh Heights Park Ranger Station, at 51 W. Earleigh Heights Rd. in Severna Park. shop of Arnold will be there to check bikes and helmet fit.
  • Behind the bike shop on the B&A Trail in Severna Park. Pedal Pushers staff will be providing free bike checks, proper helmet fit and more.  
  • Trailblazer volunteers will be available to speak with trail users about bicycle safety at both locations.

The volunteers will speak with trail visitors regarding safe riding techniques, the importance of wearing a helmet and more.

"It's more like a meet and greet," said Sue Payne, park ranger for Anne Arundel County Trails.

The event is meant to provide safety tips for cyclists riding on the trail and for the others using it as well.

Payne said the main complaint she hears from trail visitors is that cyclists don't "announce" that they are approaching (or about to pass) others using the trail. The second is speed and making sure to stop at the intersections.

Live music performed by Alison and Josette will be provided at the Earleigh Heights Ranger Station from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event coincides with National Trails Day.
