Washington Post Names Falcon Field Hockey State Contenders

During the 2012 season, the Severna Park field hockey team fell to South River in the region final.

The Washington Post called the Severna Park High School field hockey squad a team that is "poised to contend" for a state title this season.

The Falcons captured long-time coach Lil Shelton's 20th state title in 2011 with a win over Bethesda-Chevy Chase in the Maryland 4A field hockey championship. However, the team fell to county rival South River High School in the region final of the 2012 state playoffs. South River went on to capture the title.

Severna Park and South River field hockey have traded state titles in 2011 and 2012. However, Severna Park has the edge, 3-1, in state title meetings, The Post reports.

Falcon coach Ann Andrews is beginning her second season with the team. According to The Post, Severna Park lost 13 seniors, but returned midfielder Maeve Doherty and defender Emma Slattery.

Andrews told The Post the team is emphasizing offense this season.
