Spring Sports Ready to Blossom

Ready or not, spring sports are here. Severna Park is a hub of outdoor sports activity.

The crocuses have begun to poke their heads out of the near-frozen ground.  Trees are sporting new fuzzy buds.  Moms and dads all over Severna Park are hitting the sporting good stores buying new helmets, cleats, bats and balls.  It must be spring in the Park.

The unofficial beginning of the lacrosse and soccer seasons was marked once again by "Green Hornets Night" at Behind the Back on Friday night.  After a long winter stuck inside, players and parents alike enjoyed the chance to reconnect with teammates as they picked up the season's required gear.

But the gear is just the beginning.  Spring sports season is one of the busiest times of the year for folks in Severna Park.  In an effort to let our children find their comfort zone on the field, many of us have agreed to let them double-up on their spring sport commitments.

What does this mean? It means families can often be spotted sprinting from one practice to another, creating busy, even full, weekends. And best of all, it means many hours spent outdoors evenings and weekends, enjoying the spring weather at our local parks and fields.

Lacrosse tryouts for both boys and girls were held this past weekend, allowing coaches to place kids on teams that fit their skill levels.  Practices will start before you know it.

Baseball and softball players and parents wait to get the signal from the Green Hornets honchos who will announce tryout dates before the middle of March.  The season tips-off with the ever-popular opening day ceremonies at

While most of us think of soccer as a fall sport, travel teams will see full schedules from March through mid-June.  Between regular season games and tournaments throughout the Southeast, local players are booked almost every weekend.

In addition to the Green Hornets, the are taking flight for spring, too.  Sports registration is all wrapped up and tryouts for lacrosse, baseball, gymnastics and tennis are this week.  The track team has its first practice this afternoon.

Although spring may not have officially sprung quite yet, families from all across  Severna Park are ready for it so they can get out and enjoy it and watch their children blossom.
