Seniors at are in full swing now and for SPHS athletes Peter Lerario and Eric Giles it also means a senior project for the Leadership Institute.

Together the two are organizing a 'Feed 10k Run/5k Walk' to benefit Haiti with 10,000 meals from funds raised by participants, sponsors, food and beverage sales and individual donations.

“It is a 5k to raise 10k,” Lerario said, “We need to raise a total of $2,500 in order to be able to pack 10,000 meals.”

At the end of their freshman year, Giles and Lerario were accepted into the Severna Park High School Leadership Institute.  Since that time, both athletes have been involved with various volunteer organizations. Lerario became aware of Stop Hunger Now while volunteering at Revolution Church in Annapolis.

“We did a similar project through the church,” Lerario said, “Eric went to Haiti this summer and was actually able to help distribute some of the meals that we packed at the church.”

Having seen the need in Haiti and witnessed the gratitude with which the local population accepted the meals, Giles has brought a new enthusiasm to what started as just one more box that had to be checked on the list of senior to-dos. Both athletes are looking forward to a successful event.
