Severna Park JV Starts Fast, Holds Off Annapolis 14-6

Friday night's game for JV makes it a 3-0 record to date.

When meeting Coach Jim Overmier for the first time, he immediately asked me if I would take a picture of the entire Junior Varsity football team.

This "TEAM" CONCEPT” would prove vital in Severna Park’s 14-6 win at Annapolis on Friday.

Severna Park started out of the gate fast on their first drive; completed by a 35 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Taylor Kitzmiller to receiver Kyle Williamson. The extra point made it 7-0.

After Annapolis turned over the ball on downs, Severna Park would show their bread and butter running game by marching on a 60 yard drive that made the score 14-0. Severna Park’s defense shut down Annapolis for the remainder of the first half and they went into the locker room with a 14-0 lead.

The Falcons came out and in the second half by trying a little trickery with an outside kick. The kick failed and seemed to put the momentum squarely on the shoulders of Annapolis. The Panthers methodically drove 54 yards for a score to make it 14-6.

Both defenses stiffened up in the second half but Annapolis would have one final attempt to even the score. Starting on their own 24, Annapolis quarterback Edwards found his receiver for a 41 yard pass he was posed to go for a score if not for the saving tackle by Severna Park’s Williamson.

Annapolis would drive the ball down the field with a series of runs before landing on the Severna Park 2 yard line. On fourth and goal, Severna Park’s Ritch Sellers leveled the Annapolis receiver, separating him from the ball and giving the ball to Severna Park.

From here, Williamson took an 11 yard handoff to ice the game for the Falcons.

When speaking with Coach Overmier after the game, he praised his team for their “belief in themselves”, team philosophy, and their “never quit mentality” that allowed them to ultimately win the game.

He was extremely happy that both the offense and the defense were able to make plays that would secure the game for the young Falcons, and lift them to a record of 3-0.
