Severna Park Boys Cross-Country Heads for Nike Nationals

The Falcons cross-country athletes secured a spot among the best teams in the nation.

The boys cross-country team at Severna Park High School will be taking a cross-country trip next week, after a strong run Saturday in North Carolina, according to The Baltimore Sun.

The Falcons competed in the NXN Southeast Regionals on Nov. 30 in Cary, NC, where Severna Park senior Ryan Forsyth placed seventh and the boys team came in second overall. According to event sponsor Nike, the team had to place in the top two running clubs to advance to nationals. The meet in North Carolina included teams from 11 states and Washington, D.C.

Severna Park made the cut for that competition by defending its class 4A state title in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association on Nov. 9.

Falcons cross-country coach Josh Alcombright told The Capital that the team is the best he's seen in 16 years.

The Nike Cross Nationals will take place Dec. 7 in Portland, OR. The boys race is at 11:35 a.m. inside Portland Meadows, a race track converted into a 3.1-mile course with manmade obstacles and multiple laps surrounded by a 3,000-seat grandstand. According to Nike, marching bands, Nike athletes and the best high school runners in the country will be in attendance.
