Results of Green Hornets Track Meet at Severna Park High School
For the runners in the Green Hornets Summer Track Program, running and racing is as much fun as it is work.
For the past week, as I have headed out the door for my workouts I have stopped, closed my eyes and used a tool I seldom pull out of the toolbox – visualization.
Though I sometimes visualize what a run will feel like or how I will perform while out on the trails, this week I have used a new vision to fuel my run.
I close my eyes and picture the smiling faces of five year old girls running a 50 meter race. Seeing their faces in my mind’s eye reminds me of why I run – to have fun. It reminds me that even though I want to be faster and better than I was last year or the year before, what I really want from the run is to find the same joy in real life as in my memory of last Monday night’s Green Hornets track meet.

When I arrived at the the track and the infield were teeming with young athletes and their parents. The second meet in the Green Hornets Summer Track Program was underway.
Throughout the summer, children between the ages of 5 and 14 train two times and week and compete in one meet a week in track events from 50 to 800 meters as well as in field events including, the running long jump, the softball throw, shot put and discus.

Directed by Loyd Spence, the program is well organized and well staffed by both parents and volunteers from the SPHS Girl’s Cross Country Team. The efficiency with which the program is run was much appreciated by athletes and parents alike as the temperature still hovered in the low 90s even at 6 p.m.
Jahlyn Johnson, 14, of South River, registered for the Green Hornets program as a way to continue to stay motivated throughout the summer while becoming more versatile in her sport.
“I really like sprint distances,” Jahlyn said. “But if you are going to run track it is important to be able to do some of the longer distances as well. So this summer I am focusing on the 200 and 400 as well.”
Many of the parents registered their children for the program as a way to keep their kids active during the summer. Some hope it will increase their child’s speed, some sported notebooks in which they kept track of previous race results as a way to teach their children goal setting and some use it as a way to keep their children see their friends a couple of times a week while school is out.
Whatever the reasons the parents have for registering their children for the program, it was clear from the faces of the athletes that for them it was all about fun. Though they ran their best races, putting everything into the effort, the smiles on their faces told the whole story. For them, at this age, running is still fun.
