Lady Falcons Top South River, 12-6, Earn Spot In Regional Finals

Severna Park's dominance in time of possession is key, as Lady Falcons claim a 12-6 victory. They will host Broadneck on Wednesday in the regional finals.

It's easier said than done. "BE THE BEST." That challenge is issued on the back of pink shirts worn by the Severna Park girls lacrosse team. On Monday, the Lady Falcons took a step closer to achieving that goal.

With a 12-6 victory over South River, Severna Park is heading to the MPSSAA regional finals.

Seven different Lady Falcons registered goals, led by senior Madison Thomas's three scores.

"Team work is how you win," Thomas said, citing her team's unselfishness as a key to their success.

Thomas got things started, finishing a shot past South River's Kelsea Donnelly after two and a half minutes of play.

Severna Park looked poised to run away with the game when Thomas's second score brought the score to 6-1 at the 7:19 mark. The Lady Falcons dominated possession in the first half, never allowing the visitors to gather any momentum.

"Those girls really wanted it," Severna Park coach Carin Peterson said. "They really did a nice job on that draw control and ground balls."

South River's Marissa Carroll reduced the lead to three, scoring from the free position and then again three seconds before the half. Severna Park led 6-3 at the halftime.

"The problem was the possession, ground balls and we got too many fouls. It was just ridiculous," South River coach Kim McNemar said. "We were playing way too much defense. You can't play that much defense, you get worn down. We had a plan and it wasn't executed."

Goals from Ally Adams and Elizabeth Barranco returned the Falcon lead to five, as the second half got under way.

The Seahawk's Jacky Spalding and Amberly Kovalick responded to the Severna Park goals with tallies of their own, as the score sat at 8-5, with 14:29 to play.

Thomas's third score, on a pass from Kendyl Gardner, sparked a 3-0 run by the Lady Falcons. Gardner and Rachel Mia, with her second on the afternoon, would add goals to give Severna Park the 11-5 advantage.

With 2:33 to play, Carroll notched her third score only to see sophomore Morgan Torggler match her effort, as Severna Park finished 12-6 victors.

The Lady Falcons will look to take another step toward being the best, on Wednesday, when they host Broadneck in the regional finals.

"They're going to have to come to play and they're going to have to want it," Peterson said.
