Five Questions with SPHS Volleyball’s Sophie Hoekstra

Sophie Hoekstra is a junior on the Severna Park High School varsity volleyball team.

Patch stopped by the Severna Park varsity volleyball practice and spoke with junior Sophie Hoekstra about her volleyball career and this season’s expectations.

Severna Park Patch: What are your goals or expectations for this season?
Sophie Hoekstra: I would say to play the best to our abilities and don’t settle for anything less.

Severna Park Patch: What’s one of the key matchups you have this season?
Hoekstra: Definitely Broadneck. Their coach is our former coach at Severna Park and they are always one of our toughest competitions. I am really excited to play them this year, and it is going to be in our gym, which should make it even more fun. But Arundel should also be one of our tougher matches.

Severna Park Patch: What was your favorite volleyball moment or experience at Severna Park?
Hoekstra: I would say as a whole I like how our team can be really talkative. On the court and in practice we can get everything done that we need to, but what is awesome is we can get along off the court too. I feel like some teams you’re only there to win, and while we are here to win, we mesh really well. We play so well because we can get along with each other.

Severna Park Patch: What advice would you give to an aspiring high school volleyball player?
Hoekstra: Just play hard and don’t psych yourself out. Don’t think that someone who has been playing longer is better… You should always be playing your hardest and if you’re doing that you can beat the girls that have been on the team longer.

Severna Park Patch: What other groups or activities do you participate in at SPHS?
Hoekstra: I’m in student government. I am the president for our grade. I really enjoy that, and the people who are also class officers.
