Don’t let the name scare you. Rugby is played by children beginning at the age of five. The playing brackets are U-7, U-9, U-11, U-13 and U-15. Some players enjoy the game so much that they play in two or more age brackets. Many other sports benefit from the skills learned through playing rugby because it teaches speed, agility, teamwork, field sense; and it’s not expensive or per hour!!
This is a CO-ED sport!!!
Many girls from your area have been playing for years and they still go to prom in a beautiful dress. Some names you might know: Bethany, Jessica and Carli Studnicky, Samantha Young, Addie Binstock, Erica Coe, Claudia Fry, Masha Romanchak, amongst several others.

THERE IS NO TACKLING!!!
At the youth level, this is a two hand touch game. 7 players and two referees are on the field at one time. The player’s job is to pass the ball laterally or backwards to their teammates, while running and avoiding the opposing team. Forward progress is stopped once the player carrying the ball is “tagged” or chooses to utilize a strategy called a “maul” where the play is stopped, the field reset and the team with the ball has an opportunity to reorganize, quickly. Scores are tallied when a player places the ball in the “try”zone (similar to the end zone in football), then a place kicker attempts to kick the ball through the football posts to score extra points.
OH, It’s a SUMMER Sport, I Don’t WANT THAT COMMITMENT!!!!!
EXACTLY!!!!! WE AGREE!!!!
Summer Rugby is a laid back sport with coaches that understand about and take their own vacations. Yes, you must understand how to play the game. Yes, there are evening practices at Kinder Farm Park, but, there is NO punishment if you miss practice here and there or cannot make the games. AND, it is reasonably priced so that parents don’t feel pressured either. For this sport you need tennis shoes or cleats and the desire to run and have teammates.
Rugby carries a Social “STIGMA”
Yes, we like to eat!!!
After every series of games, members from all participating teams gather together to have a picnic. The home team usually provides the food. The kids have formed life long friendships simply by having a hot dog and a bag of chips together. Some players have moved on to the tackle organizations and to play in high school where teams are forming rapidly.
There are more youth teams than you think!!!
Rugby is growing exponentially. In Anne Arundel County there are usually four or more organizations running a youth rugby program. Howard County is a strong competitor fielding several hundreds of players and Carroll County has boasted some fast running teams. Future collegiate and Olympic runners have passed through these programs. The Green Hornets will play against most teams. Games are Saturday mornings. Travelling to another field is minimal. There’s a HUGE tournament at the end of the season, which is usually held in late July /early August.

The Green Hornets teams are usually in the top three, even in years when the team is new.
So, there’s no excuse not to give RUGBY a “TRY”
Join us in the Green Hornet organization and sign up for the summer sport.
