Annapolis Stuns Severna Park, 6-5

Shut out in the second half, the Falcons are upset by no. 8 seed Annapolis, at home.

Severna Park's quest for a repeat Maryland state boys lacrosse title came to an end on Monday, as the Falcons were upset by Annapolis, 6-5.

The visiting no. 8 seed Panthers benefited from a dominant effort from goalkeeper Kevin Pastrana to silence the Severna Park attack, en route to victory.

"This is the time to be playing our best lacrosse," Annapolis coach Dustin McConnaughhay said.

Senior Joe Galdi scored a minute into the game, only to be matched by the Panthers Riggs Dawson. The Annapolis midfielder curled in from the right of the goal to fire past Dylan Pasiuk, while getting crushed by a pair of Falcon defenders.

Galdi would give Severna Park the lead again, with a 12-yard shot, low past Pastrana, almost identical to his first. And a goal from senior Avery Littlejohn meant the hosts finished the first quarter up 3-1.

The Panthers began the second quarter with a 3-0 rally to take the lead. Dylan Zingler scored and then assisted Mack Bayline for the equalizer. A spin move by Halen Bullen allowed Annapolis to take the lead at the 5:40 mark.

Eighty-one seconds later, senior Tripp Fulton leveled the game back at 4-4. Fulton then beat the clock with his second score just before the halftime buzzer sounded. Severna Park headed to the break ahead 5-4.

The second half saw scoring at a premium, as two of Anne Arundel county's best defenses went head to head.

Annapolis tied things up again, when Calyl Robinson tallied seven minutes into the third.

Despite numerous attempts, Severna Park struggled with its chances to equalize. Pastrana recorded five saves in the third quarter for Annapolis, on his way to 14 for the game.

"To be shut out in the second half is unacceptable," Severna Park coach Larry Kramer said.

Fifteen seconds into the fourth quarter, along with a couple quick passes, Bayline put Annapolis ahead with a feed from Wick Dawson.

Shot after shot, the Falcons could not manage to beat Pastrana. Three good looks in the waining seconds gave Annapolis a scare, but the visiting Panthers held on to stun Severna Park.

"We had a great group of seniors this year. Great guys that put a lot of effort and energy into the season and their careers here," Kramer said.
