Falcons impressive over Gophers in rain soaked 38-22 win

The 3-2 SP Falcons traveled to the 1-4 Glen Burnie Gophers last night in Anne Arundel County league action.  This on a night more suited for ark construction or training by Olympian Michael Phelps.

The Falcons got off the bus from Severna Park in the rain and would emerge 2 1/2 hours later with the win.  The Falcons would benefit by 2 early turnovers by the Gophers,  the first a fumble recovered by #55 Luke King and a interception by #7 Tyler Haskell.

The Falcons started off the evening by feeding a steady diet of running the ball by #24 Kieran Jenkins., impressively moving the ball down the field and scoring on the rain soaked field.  Running plays accounted for early TD's by Jenkins and #12 Kitzmiller.  One TD pass from Kitzmiller to #80 a wide open Chris Lee.  6 points at a time, the Falcons built an early lead but were unsuccessful on PAT's either the 1pt kind or 2pt conversion.

With time running out in the first half and facing a 3rd and long, #12 Kitzmiller threw a beautiful spiral to #34 Kyle Williamson who caught the ball on the Gopher 10 yard line and scampered into the end zone for a TD with no time remaining on the clock.

2nd half saw more of the same action and the Falcons building their lead to 38-6 before start of the 4th quarter.  Thats when a combination of sloppy field conditions, more rain and wind enabled the Gophers to get back on the board.  After a defensive stand by the Gophers the Falcons were punting out of their 20 yard line, a water logged ball, against a strong wind  gave the Gophers the ball at the Falcon 35.  Several plays later and a 2pt conversion had the Gophers back on the board 38-14.
This is when it got strange,  a successful onside kick by the Gophers bounced off Falcon defenders and GB recovered the kick at the 40.  Moving down the field again,  the Gophers scored and converted another 2 pt play to make it 38-22.  Again the Gophers lined up and successfully converted another onside kick and were moving the Offense down to the Falcon 9 yard line.   A pass was intercepted by Falcon defender #40 Sal Schaner.  SP was able to run out the remaining 2 minutes of the game to seal the victory.

Couple of observations from the newly installed  and greatly appreciated Visitors stands at Glen Burnie.  Even with 15 injured or sick Falcons Varsity members the team came together and played great.  In the conditions it was a great victory.  Thoughts and prayers go out to Falcon #54 Richard Sellars who went down in the first half and was helped off the field.  Feel better Rich,  Falcon Nation is hoping for a quick return to the field.

Big week coming up.  The Falcons travel back to Broadneck for a 2nd year in a row to renew their neighborhood rivalry against a 5-1 Bruins team.  This is a Saturday game at 1:00pm.   Broadneck always packs the house on their side of the field, so why don't you?  rain or shine come out and support your Falcons varsity.
