SPHS To Receive $10K Giant Food Award

Severna Park High School will receive funds through Giant Food store's A+ Rewards program.

is among 15 Maryland schools receiving the largest monetary award through Giant Food's 2011-2012 A+ School Rewards program, according to a press release.

A $10,378.77 check from Giant will be presented on Thursday at the school.

"SPHS is very excited to be receiving this award once again from Giant," Patrick Bathras, SPHS principal, wrote in an email to Patch. "Giant has been such a huge supporter of SPHS and schools across the county and state over the years.

"Their contributions help us to purchase instructional technology and other materials that enhance the learning experience in the classroom.  We appreciate the continued involvement and look forward to receiving the award.  I also thank our wonderfully active and supportive parents who sign up through the Giant program to support our school," he said.

Severna Park is among 1,307 other Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and Washington, DC schools to receive funds through the program. Overall, Giant Food of Landover, MD, is presenting $1.2 million to Maryland schools and nearly $2 million in total awards, according to the release.

The A+ School Rewards program allows schools to earn funds to support school programs and enrichment activities every time a customer makes a purchase using their Giant card in their neighborhood Giant Food.

“Giant is very proud to support 1,307 Maryland schools and give back to the communities we’re so privileged to serve,” said Anthony Hucker, president, Giant Food of Landover.

The A+ School Rewards program is linked to shoppers’ Giant cards, earning points for all in-store purchases. Giant customers can designate up to two schools to benefit from their purchases, according to the release.

Funds raised by A+ School Rewards have helped purchase new computers, additional classroom technology, musical instruments and athletic uniforms. They have also funded school aids, field trips, sports and after-school programs. 

The other local schools receiving the largest awards from the 2011-2012 A+ School Rewards program are St. Mary’s Elementary School of Annapolis, who will be awarded $11,517.52, and the for $8,248.58.
