SPHS Not Ranked in Newsweek Poll

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday and four county schools were included in the top 2,000.

Newsweek released a ranking of top high schools in the country on Monday but Severna Park High was not one of the four county schools ranked.

Newsweek ranked three high schools in Anne Arundel County among the top 1,000 in the country, and a fourth among the top 2,000. Despite recent rankings in other polls this year, Severna Park High was not on the Newsweek list.

Earlier this year, Severna Park High received the second-highest marks of Anne Arundel County Schools in a Washington Post ranking of schools across the country. The school also received high marks in a national survey of the best high schools by US News.

For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools, with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013.

Broadneck High School is highest on the list, ranking 722, followed by Arundel High School at 840, then South River High School at 938 and Annapolis High School at 1,843.

The Newsweek survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria, including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advance International Certificate courses. The final scores then determined Newsweek’s final rankings.
