SPHS Athlete Recognized in ‘Sports Illustrated’

Maeve Doherty a junior at Severna Park High School appeared in the Dec. 24 issue of Sports Illustrated.

It’s common to find Sports Illustrated magazines filled with your favorite professional athletes or well-known college players.

However, last week’s copy of the sports magazine featured a familiar face for Severna Park residents—Severna Park High School junior Maeve Doherty.

Doherty, a defensive player on the Falcon field hockey team, was recognized in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd Section,” which highlights outstanding high school athletes.

Sports Illustrated wrote the following about Doherty:

Maeve, a junior defenseman at Severna Park High, was named All-State in helping the Falcons reach the state regional final for the second straight season, allowing only 13 goals in 16 games. Last year she scored the first goal in the Maryland Class 4A championship to lead the team to its 20th state title. Maeve, who also competes with the SPark Field Hockey Club, was chosen last March for the U-19 junior national indoor team. Her AAU Junior Olympics team won silver in July.

This past year, Severna Park High School led the All-State squad with three first-team selections, including Doherty.

Severna Park field hockey entered the 2012 season as the defending 4A state champions, but fell to South River in the playoffs.
