Severn School's 5K Brings in 100 Plus Runners

The proceeds will benefit the school and the Severn River Association

By Hamilton Tyler, Severn School parent

After a vigorous warm up and the Star Spangled Banner performed by Severn School Junior Alec Green, more than 100 runners toed the starting line on Water Street in near perfect sunny, cool and crisp conditions on Saturday for the 5K Run.

After a lap around the school, the runners made their way onto Riggs Avenue for a lap around Linstead before heading back onto Riggs and returning to the finish line at Severn to complete the certified 3.1 mile course.

On the men’s side, Severn School sophomore Matt Rossborg outkicked Patrick Murray over the last 100 yards to break the tape in 17 minutes and 29 seconds in an exciting finish.

Severn alumni Tyler Larkin (class of 2003) was just behind Matt and Patrick to take third place. Matt also won the Headmaster’s Challenge for the first male upper school Severn student. Seventh-grader Duffy Burns won the Headmaster’s Challenge for the first male middle school Severn student.

sophomore Abby Thomas took first place for the women with a stellar time of 19 minutes and 14 seconds. Abby was followed by Severn parent Amy Reed in second place and Severn teacher Amy Luca in third place.

Both Matt and Abby enjoyed very successful soccer seasons this fall which obviously elevated their level of fitness. Junior Brigid Finlay won the Headmaster’s Challenge for the first female upper school Severn student.  Seventh-grader Sarah Cumm won the Headmaster’s Challenge for the first female middle school Severn student.

Proceeds from the race benefited Severn School and the Severn River Association. Race Director Keith Behr and his committee worked hard to insure a family friendly event with many parents running with their children. The young legs bested the parents, some of whom had attended the Severn School Bull Roast the previous evening.

The major sponsor for the event was Severna Park’s new running store, Spark Running, located in Park Plaza and owned and operated by Severn Alumni Caitlin Burman.
