Oak Hill Receives Seven Seals Award

The award is given to schools that support men and women in the National Guard.

Oak Hill Elementary School has been recognized for its work with the National Guard.

The Severna Park school has been honored with the Seven Seals Award. The recognition is for the school’s support of the men and women in the National Guard and Reserve and their children who attend county schools, according to an announcement.

The award is sponsored by the Employer Support of The Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense organization established in 1972.

Oak Hill has several students whose parents are members of the National Guard and Reserve. The school works to develop and maintain relationships between students, parents, teachers and other school staff.

The relationships help increase student achievement and address issues often experienced by military children. The school was nominated for the award by a parent stationed in Dubai who has two students at Oak Hill.

“We are very proud to have received this award because it exemplifies the true team spirit that everyone at Oak Hill embodies every single day,” said Oak Hill Principal Deneen Houghton in a release. “Children of parents in the National Guard and Reserve have experiences that many of our other children do not, and we need to address them to help those students achieve their full potential.”

In November, Patch spoke with Oak Hill Girl Scout Troop 1771 who had been selling Girl Scout cookies for troops stationed overseas though the Gift of Caring program. The troop was honored by the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland as the winners of the “Who Has the Biggest Heart” contest, which recognizes the troop with the highest pre-sale cookie number.

The Seven Seals Award is symbolic of the seven services: Army National Guard; Army Reserve; Navy Reserve; Marine Corps Reserve; Air National Guard; Air Force Reserve; and Coast Guard Reserve.
