How to Beat the Pre-K Waiting List in Anne Arundel

Pre-K enrollment is limited because of funding, and some schools may have waiting lists.

Planning for your child's first foray into public schools?

Registration for prekindergarten classes will begin on Feb. 4, and to avoid their child being placed on a waiting list, parents are urged to register as soon as possible.

Maryland schools offer prekindergarten programs designed to help children who are economically disadvantaged or homeless prepare for their full schooling experience. When additional seats are available, children with other readiness needs may be enrolled, according to a press release.

Parents must register in person at the school their child will be attending. The program is available to all children who will be at least 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2014, but enrollment is limited because of funding, and some schools may have waiting lists.

When registering in person, the following documents will be required:

Parents applying for prekindergarten due to economic need must provide income eligibility verification by submitting the following documentation:

  • Recent federal income tax return (a 1040 statement), including any other documentation on income sources, such as child support
  • A current award letter for temporary cash assistance or supplemental nutrition assistance program

For more information on applying, visit the school system's website, or contact the AACPS Planning Office at 410-439-5683.
