Football: Severn Gunning For State Championships

After losing in the MIAA C Conference Championship last year, the Severn Football team is looking to head back to the title game.

After going 8-3 last season and making an appearance in the MIAA C Conference Championship game, the Severn football team is looking to finish this season with a victory.

“We absolutely want to win this year,” said senior tight end Mike Dennin. “It was a really tough loss last year. But there is no looking back. You have to move forward and focus on the year coming up. We are going to build off that championship run we had last year, but this time we are going to finish it up and win.”

Despite defeating St. Francis 33-0 during the regular season last year, the Admirals were unable to top them during the championship game. Severn fell to the Panthers 34-17 in the conference championship.

“This year we want to win the championship,” said Jack Treanor a senior left tackle. “We lost in the championship last year, so I think it would be good to come back and win it this year and let people know we are still in the hunt.”

Severn is off to a good start. Despite playing three teams in the upper B Conference the team is 2-1, with their only loss coming to Boys Latin in overtime.

Second-year Head Coach Chris Kirchenheiter said he is pleased with the team’s start and is looking to build off what they learned from the loss.

“We opened up our season with three B Conference schools although we are a C conference school,” Kirchenheiter said. “So to be 2-1 with a tough B conference we are pretty happy. We just want to build on the momentum we have now heading into our conference schedule.”

While Severn is definitely intent on heading back to the championship game, there are other things the team is proud of. And that is bringing the football culture back to the school.

“In the past years football is something we kind of lost as a culture here at Severn,” said senior defensive end David Watt. “We had some struggles and lost the culture. But now we are bringing it back to the school. It was once a huge part of the school, and now it is coming back strong and people are excited about football again.”

Adding to the excitement is not just the varsity team’s success, but the JV victories, as well. The JV football squad is off to a perfect 3-0 start.

“One of the things that we are most excited about is not just the success we are having at the varsity level,” Kirchenheiter said. “We are extremely excited about the number of young players coming to Severn to play football. And our JV program is benefiting from that. It is off to 3-0 start. So the future looks bright too and that’s great.”
