Folger McKinsey Celebrates Read Across America Day Friday

Folger McKinsey Elementary is celebrating Read Across America Day in style on Friday. The school will have numerous guest readers and different celebrations throughout the day.

"At Folger, we are celebrating by inviting guest readers to come into each classroom and share their love of reading with our students," said PTO member and parent Valerie Smith.

Folger will also host a contest during the morning announcements on Friday. A passage from a well-known Dr. Seuss book will be read to students, and if they correctly identify the title, they will be entered into a raffle for prizes.

The following guests are scheduled to stop by Folger on Friday to celebrate:

• Louie, the mascot for the Bowie Baysox baseball team
• Abby DelPrete and Caroline Leuschner, both former Folger students who now attend Severna Park High School
• Jeff Franklin, the owner of Franklin's Toys
• State Delegate Cathy Vitale, also a Folger alum
• Scott and Jennifer Macallair, Folger parents and a police office and firefighter, who will be coming in uniform
• Becky Lomax of Chelonia Eco Adventures, a local group that specializes in environmental education programs for kids
• Barbara Gosnell, retired Folger media specialist
• The owner of Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, who will also be bringing her store's mascot
• Philip Kittiver and Heather Bobbitt of the Folger Drama Club
• Lou DiMenna, retired Folger PE teacher
• Dr. Alix Bray, Folger parent and veterinarian
• Dr. Todd Fare, Folger parent and local chiropractor
• Ed Takemori of the Folger recycling program
• Kevin Laughlin, parent and member of the US Army

The festivities are set to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
