The public is invited to attend a free symposium, "Navigating the Elder Care Maze: What You Need to Know About the Legal Issues Facing Older Adults and Their Caregivers," from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Anne Arundel Community College, 101 College Parkway, Arnold, Maryland.
Attendees will learn about legal issues including estate planning, cost of care issues including Medicare, and strategies for preventing fraud and abuse targeting the elderly.
Maryland Department of Aging’s Secretary Gloria Lawlah will welcome participants and present opening remarks. Jason Frank, Esq., of Frank, Frank & Scherr, LLC, will give
keynote remarks during lunch (which will be free to all participants). Elder law attorneys from around the State of Maryland will present the sessions, which also will feature William Gruhn, Chief of the Consumer Protection Division in the Office of the Maryland Attorney General.
The event is presented by the Maryland State Bar
Association's Leadership Academy. The college's Legal Studies Institute is
co-sponsor.
At the end of the day, pre-registered attendees can meet with a volunteer attorney for a free consultation or to have a power of attorney and/or living will prepared at no
cost. The final session will also feature a free yoga and stress relief workshop, and a self-defense presentation.
