County Begins Planting Leelyn Drive Storm Management Area

Students from several Anne Arundel County public schools, in conjunction with the Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center, planted native plants along the banks of the Leelyn Drive Storm Water Management Area last week.

The native plants installed by county public school students last week along Leelyn Drive, behind Kohls Department store at the Severna Park Marketplace, will help reduce the negative effects of stormwater runoff pollution in Cypress Creek. As the trees and shrubs mature, valuable habitat will be created for wildlife.

A story about the project,by the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works (DPW) was featured on Patch in August. The purpose of the project is to help reduce stormwater runoff from polluting the north branch of Cypress Creek.

"This project will greatly enhance that filtration capacity and provide infiltration that recharges the groundwater system and better support the native tree and plant community," said Matt Diehl of the DPW, in a comment thread on Patch.

The project was funded by grant money provided by the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays 2010 Trust Fund which is administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
