Class of 2011 Shine at Severna Park High School Senior Awards and Showcase

Over 100 seniors from the SPHS Class of 2011 are recognized for outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, arts and humanities at the Severna Park High School Senior Awards and Showcase on May 23.

Lively jazz tunes, provided by the Severna Park High School (SPHS) Jazz Band, filled the air as smiling seniors from the Class of 2011 entered the school's auditorium for the 51st Annual Senior Awards and Showcase on Monday. 

Patrick Bathras,principal of SPHS welcomed students, staff, award presenters, parents and family members.  “It is great to gather to celebrate the achievements of seniors and I’d like to thank the seniors for giving us this opportunity to recognize them.” Bathras stated.

Bathras shared that the Class of 2011 had impressive achievements this past year to include over $10 million in scholarships had been awarded to this year’s seniors. In addition, 95 percent of the graduating seniors will be attending either a two or four year college.

Bathras also stated that 50 percent of the Class of 2011 will be attending school out- of- state.  He was also proud to add that 92 percent of the seniors had taken at least one Advanced Placement course while at SPHS.

Forty-eight awards given to over 100 seniors in a variety of categories ranging from academics and athletics to arts and humanities.  This year’s class also had five students receive appointments to the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy and the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The representatives from the academies each said their individual appointment was valued at over $400,000.  In addition, Barry Davis, LCDR, USN (Ret.) from United States Naval Academy, complimented Severna Park High School for being awarded five appointments - which he said was more than any other high school in the area.   

From the community, both the Severna Park Kiwanis and the presented awards.  In addition, Maryland Delegate Cathy Vitale (R-Severna Park)  and Senator Edward Reilly presented the Maryland House of Delegates Scholarship and the Maryland Senatorial Scholarship, to Allison O’Donnell.

The award ceremony also included special music by the senior vocal ensemble, a saxophone solo by Tyler Wilkinson and a cello duet by Julia Stevens and Nicole Provenza.

The evening concluded with guidance counselors recognizing seniors for their individual scholarships awarded and announcing the college they will be attending.
