Brother-Sister Duo Stars in Rock 'n' Roll Revival

The show opens on Friday and most performances are sold out.

When Severna Park High freshman Lindsay Smith was in middle school she knew one thing for sure about high school—she wanted to be in Rock 'n' Roll Revival.

"I joined the theater program in the middle school and all the kids were so excited to be going into high school because they wanted to try out for Rock 'n' Roll," Lindsay Smith said.

The family moved to the Severna Park area from Chicago two years ago, and it didn't take long for her brother, Macrae Smith, to realize the same thing.

"I have been working with theater company for a while and everyone just goes on and on about how Rock ‘n’ Roll is the best thing ever," Macrae Smith said.

Making it into Rock 'n' Roll Revival is no easy task. Those wishing to participate must endure two grueling auditions—one that focuses on dance, and one on singing. Contestants are graded on their performance as well as their enthusiasm in both auditions and those with the highest combined score make it in.

Macrae Smith said only one out of about every three students who audition make it into the show. This year's Rock 'n' Roll Revival XXIV features roughly 112 students.

"It’s a little bit stressful during tech week to prepare with all the kids and pull all the people together," Lindsay Smith said. "But it is really fun once it comes together."

Macrae Smith is no stranger to SPHS drama productions. The sophomore had a roll in Les Mis in November, but he said there's something different about Rock 'n' Roll.

"In some senses it is similar in the fact that you have a tech week but in Rock ‘n’ Roll everyone's roles are very different than Les Mis," Macrae said. "Also we have two weeks of tech week now, which is a lot more grueling."

Both Macrae and Lindsay are anxious for opening night. Both questioned if the first performance would run smoothly, but said they are sure it's going to be a great show.

"I am most looking forward to opening night and the rush you get when all the audience is there and you are singing for them," Lindsay said.
