Anne Arundel County Public Schools will be paid $20,000 with Superintendent Kevin Maxwell's early departure.

Of the bill, $15,000 will be paid by Maxwell's new employer, Prince George's County Public Schools, where he begins next month as CEO, The Capital Gazette reports. The rest will be paid through Maxwell's unpaid leave, according to the report.

The penalty was due to Maxwell's failure to give three months notice before leaving prior to the end of his contract, which was set to expire in 2014, according to the report.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools is likely to have an interim superintendent for at least the next year following Maxwell's resignation. The Board of Education has yet to select a new head of schools.
