Proposed Crematory Hearing Postponed

The County Council has delayed the hearing until Aug. 1 when residents of nearby communities can voice their concern over the proposed location on Headquarters Drive in Millersville.

A County Council Hearing pertaining to Bill 53-11 concerning the proposed crematory to operate on Headquarters Drive in Millersville has been postponed until Aug. 1.

County Council Chairman Dick Ladd informed the Shipley's Choice Homeowners Association of the change last week. The meeting, previously scheduled for July 18 has been pushed back due to the load of other zoning bills.

The community of Shipley's Choice, located in Millersville, behind where the proposed crematory would operate, has expressed deep opposition to the proposed location of the business, Maryland Crematory LLC .

An initial meeting in May brought hundreds of residents to the Earleigh Heights Fire Hall to question the owners of the crematory and also representatives of the Maryland Department of Environment on air quality concerns and current zoning.

Bill 53-11 would disqualify the crematorium from operating out of the Headquarters Drive location—a commercially zoned area—where some work has already begun on the site. The bill, sponsored by Ladd, will specifically define which zones crematories and funeral establishments can be located.
