Severna Park Man Killed in Benfield Blvd. Crash

The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon on Benfield Boulevard at Veterans Highway in Millersville.

Tuesday’s accident on Benfield Boulevard claimed the life of a Severna Park man when the truck he was driving crashed into a car waiting at a red light, according to Anne Arundel County police.

Police said James Robert Parker, 56, of Severna Park was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after the accident.

According to the release, officers responded to the intersection of eastbound Benfield Boulevard and Veterans Highway in Millersville at 12:48 p.m. on Tuesday for the report of a serious, multiple vehicle crash.

Paramedics arrived on scene and found the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck, Parker, unresponsive. He was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary information indicated a Ford Expedition and a Honda CR-V were stopped for the red light in the left travel lane of eastbound Benfield Boulevard  when the Expedition was suddenly struck from behind by the pickup truck, according to police.

As a result of impact, the Expedition was pushed into the rear of the CR-V, which then traveled across the intersection before coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes of Benfield Boulevard, police said. Both the Dodge Ram and the Expedition came to rest in the eastbound lanes of Benfield Boulevard on the west portion of the intersection.

The driver and passenger of the Expedition were not injured, officials said. The driver of the CR-V sustained minor injuries and was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

According to the release, preliminary investigations revealed no evidence that the driver of the Dodge Ram attempted to avoid collision prior to the impact. There is also no initial evidence that alcohol or excessive speed were contributing factors in this crash, police said.

The investigation into the cause of the collision continues.
