POLL: What Should Be Done About 'The Pit'?

Do you think anything can be done to make this place safer?

A popular hangout for students was

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing. Anne Arundel County police say they are looking into who was the "aggressor" in the fight—the 18-year-old, or the 15-year-old who injured him.

Students have come to call that place "." It's just behind the school's faculty parking lot, and though it roams, it's usually adjacent to property of Southview Drive and Chestnut Tree Drive residents.

Readers have commented about their own experiences with The Pit, sayingthis fight was nothing new. But should authorities allow it to continue existing after an 18-year-old was hospitalized?

Or will it thrive even with additional policing?

I really don't think you can eliminate such gatherings. They're as old as time, but I do have a problem with the crowd being half in the road on a busy throughway, and I know a lot of kids whose parents don't allow them to walk by there for fear of a bad encounter. I don't like that others are so inconvenienced by them (the homeowners, etc.) It's a true nuisance. I just wish they had a better place to go, and if laws are being broken (I hear tell of drug dealing, but that's nothing I know of firsthand), the police need to clean it up. Easier said than done, I know.

Its my understanding that the 18 year old did not attend Broadneck. That being the case, this could have happened anywhere at anytime...it just happened to transpire as school was letting out. There is not much the school can do and it could be policed more but it sounds like it was just bad luck, and reality of what can happen in a fight...

You cannot punish students who frequent 'the pit'. It's on public property. Not advocating for this area, because it has been a huge nuisance for decades. Sidewalks need to be installed along the portion of Southview to at least try and keep the herds of students out of the middle of the road. Police presence would help keep the flow of traffic through there and reduce or eliminate any potential illegal activity that 'might be' taking place. Students are so rude, disrespectful, and obnoxious to vehicles in the road. The students block the road by congregating. They purposely walk in the road or stand in the road and you have to stop as they walk by - they won't step out of the path of an oncoming car - PERIOD. Year in and year out it's the same. If I was the property owner of that corner house with the Stop sign, I'd install a watering system and water that area every day from 2--2:30! Bet the kids wouldn't stand around then!

I once read where kids were hanging out near a 7/11 - the owner simply installed a pair of exterior speakers and began cranking up the Libarace - no more problems with kids hanging out and causing problems. You could put the music on a timer and have the Libarace Hour! from 2:00 to 3:00 PM weekdays!

Once upon a time before polical correctness began to strangle society, I had a group of teenagers ambling down the middle of the road refusing to let me pass. I simply got within about 10 feet, slipped my Mustang in neutral and floored it. Amazing how fast a group of kids cleared the road. I just rolled by and said thank you out the window as I passed. Today I would probably get arrested for that so I would not suggest it today.
