Dozens of Crashes On Icy Roads Friday Morning

Police reported at least 70 accidents, though none serious.

Police and fire officials said icy road conditions led to dozens of accidents in the county during the morning commute, but there were no immediate reports of serious injuries.

Slick roadways caused more than "70 reported crashes of varying degrees" after 5:45 a.m., according to Anne Arundel County Police.

Division Chief Keith Swindle of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said crews responded to more than 30 incidents, all minor in nature.

Road conditions led local school officials to allow for excused absences for students whose parents choose to keep them home. However, they met some criticism from parents who questioned why school openings were not delayed. School officials said the timing of the bad weather made the decision difficult.
