Update: Bicyclist Hit on Ritchie Highway

The accident on Route 2 in Arnold caused major traffic delays on Monday afternoon.

(Updated: 8:37 p.m.)— An accident Monday on northbound Ritchie Highway resulted in a bicyclist being flown to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with life-threatening injuries, according to Anne Arundel County police.

As of 8:30 p.m. Monday night, the bicyclist, Susan Hahn of Arnold, is in serious condition at The University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to a release.

At 2:29 p.m. Monday police said Hahn was traveling south on Ritchie Highway, just past Jones Station Road, when she attempted to turn left across the northbound lanes of Ritchie Highway and into a nearby shopping center.

As the bicyclist waited to cross traffic from a dedicated turn lane, the northbound Ritchie Highway traffic in left lane and center lane stopped to permit her to cross, according to a release. As the bicyclist crossed over the right lane she was struck by a car.

Police said there is no evidence to suggest drugs and/or alcohol contributed to the crash. Officials also said there is no evidence the driver of the Hyundai was "speeding or traveling in a negligent manner prior to this collision."

The accident remains under investigation.
