How did we get here?

The Critical Area Law, which we hoped would reverse this tend, is failing.

Year-after-year the Magothy’s health has been declining, but once upon a time, the Magothy was clean and healthier. Back then there were millions of oysters filtering the river and hundreds of acres of underwater grasses to resupply life giving oxygen. Today we have too few oysters and only about two acres of underwater grasses left.

Water quality has declined to the point that swimming in the Magothy has become a health hazard. I have seen two waterfront cottages about the same size built next each other, the County gave permission to rebuild one with a McMansion which triples the original cottage size and at the same time the county denied the other cottage plans to add a small extension to an existing porch.

The Critical Area Law, which we hoped would reverse this tend, is failing. The enforcement is inconsistent. We need better tools to enforce the law.
