9 year old Arnold girl wins summer reading contest

Delaney Smith, 9 years old, from Arnold is the winner of the Happy Birthday America, Summer Reading Contest.  Sponsored by Delegate Cathy Vitale, (District 33) the contest was unveiled during the Severna Park 4th of July parade and encouraged children to read over their summer vacation.  “When I was growing up, I would read any chance I got, – At the pool, in the car and (looking at Delaney, who does the same) even at night in bed with a flash light”.  Delaney (left) waits for Delegate Vitale to “serve up on her promise”.  Vitale said that Delaney read and entered over 150 books.  “I was really impressed that a 9 year old, would dedicate that much time to reading, particularly summer reading when there are so many distractions and “fun stuff going on”   said Vitale.    Dana Smith, Delaney’s Mom, said she is a self-motivated young girl,  “It is a great accomplishment”.  Mrs. Vitale said “Reading is essential to the development and growth of our children.  After learning how many books Laney read, I couldn’t help but expand the award to an ice cream party for the entire class at Arnold Elementary School.  As the motto of the contest stated, Ms. Vitale reminded the children “Their adventure starts on page one”.  Vitale plans on holding a new contest next summer.
