Community Corner

Open House at The Baltimore School of Independent Learners

The Baltimore School of Independent Learners is a community-based, nontraditional, alternative educational program. Our school is child and family centered. We work with families to design a structured living and learning environment that is flexible, collaborative, individualized, and progressive.

BSIL is under the jurisdiction of The Community of Ethical People, an inclusive, diverse and secular organization. Our education regulations are church-exempt and therefore not governed by the Maryland State Board of Education.

Our school is governed by the BSIL Board of Directors in close cooperation with our member families.

The BSIL founders and families identified a need for something other than the existing educational institutions, something other than homeschooling, something different. What we have created is a program and a place where the students and their families come first. Our priorities include high academic standards, a choice for families in how they want and need to educate and raise their children, parent involvement, community partnership, creative learning, ethical living, and personal responsibility.

Join us at the Open House to learn more about the program and see the facility.
