Sandy Leaves Downed Trees, Power Lines, Flooding

Now that Hurricane Sandy has left its mark on Severna Park, residents have begun the process of assessing the damage.

There are several downed power lines and a fallen trees along the B&A Trail and Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard. There is also a substantial amount of standing water blocking a lane on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard.

Residents of Round Bay were out on Tuesday morning surveying the damage, including Mary Lindsay and Joan Thomas.

"Overall I think we were very lucky," Lindsay said. "We did lose power but we don't have any downed trees. It was definitely not as bad as we had expected."

There is some substantial water in Thomas' front yard, but she said it is there all the time. She joked that they call it Lake Thomas.

"I think the wind and the rain were the worst part," Thomas said. "We slept in our basement last night but everything seems to be OK."

The water along the beach at Round Bay had risen substantially.

Downed power lines are also present on Arundel Beach Road and a BGE truck is parked and blocking a lane in an effort to keep people away from the power line.

As of 11:20 a.m., 51,462 BGE customers in Anne Arundel County were without power, according to its website. Residents in Round Bay, along Arundel Beach Road, in Fair Winds and in Manhattan Beach all reported power outages.

At 10 a.m. all traffic lights on College Parkway were out or blinking, including the intersection at Ritchie Highway and College Parkway. Cypress Creek Road at Ritchie Highway was also out.

Furthermore, lights at Robinson Road and Evergreen—in front of Severna Park High School—were also out. Drivers are being asked to remember to treat all dark intersections as four-way stops.
