NWS Issues Coastal Flood Advisory for Severna Park

Heavy wind gusts of 40 mph could cause power outages throughout the area, BGE officials said.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a coastal flood advisory Tuesday morning, forecasting heavy winds and rain throughout the day in Severna Park and the rest of Anne Arundel County.

The NWS said showers are “likely” before noon with thunderstorms occurring from noon to 4 p.m. The forecast also calls for strong winds, with gusts reaching as high as 40 mph, according to the NWS website.

“A coastal flood advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore,” according to the NWS weather alert.

Conditions throughout the day will be favorable for flooding as rain accumulates, and residents should be alert for warnings as Tuesday progresses, NWS reported. With an 80 percent chance of precipitation during the day, the forecast also said the area would get about a half an inch of rain before 4 p.m.

A Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) press release said the local energy supplier is already preparing for possible damages. However, strong winds could make things tricky for BGE trucks if the storm continues after outages occur.

“Strong storm activity may bring periods of heavy rain … and wind gust of up to 40 mph, which could cause damage to overhead and underground electric distribution equipment,” according to the release. “Certain types of work such as repairs requiring the use of bucket trucks cannot be safely performed when the win exceeds 25 mph.”
