Local Group Stuffs Stockings for Troops

The Severna Park Republican's Women's Club is collecting donations to fill stockings for troops.

While you’re out and about buying gifts for your family this holiday season, consider making an extra purchase for military personnel serving overseas.

For the seventh year in a row, the Severna Park Republican’s Women’s Club is putting together stockings for troops.

“All of the stockings are handmade from felt and we are asking for donations to fill the stockings,” said Amy Leahy, president of the Severna Park Republican’s Women’s Club. “And then all of the stockings go to service members from Maryland.”

This year’s stockings will be shipped to members of the 115th Military Police Battalion and the Special Forces unit from Gunpowder Military Reservation in Glen Arm, MD.

Leahy said the Special Forces unit is currently in Afghanistan training Afghan counterparts to provide security.

The project seems like a perfect fit for the club because some of its members are former military wives.

“I think it is special because we have a lot of women who are retired military wives for one, and just the fact that we have been involved in the war for so long,” Leahy said. “It is something we like to do to help support the soldiers.”

Leahy suggests donating the following supplies to fill the stockings: Dried fruit, snacks that do not crush easily, Ramen noodles, instant drinks, cough drops, eye drops, disposable razors, baby wipes, chewing gum, shoe insole cushions, ear buds, moisturizer with sunscreen, DVD's and CD's, hand-held games, crossword puzzles and Sudoku, pens and note cards, toiletries (not hotel sample size).

“I was also told we need the small individual containers of bubbles. Apparently they really like those, which I thought was neat and funny,” Leahy said.

Donations can be dropped off to the following Severna Park locations until Dec. 7:

  • 712 Monmouth Ave.
  • 644 Tewkesbury in Colchester
  • 534 Heavitree Hill in Chartwell
  • Chesapeake Treasures in Park Plaza

Cash donations can be made payable to SPRWC and mailed to P.O. Box 1037, Severna Park, MD 21146.  These donations will assist with postage costs and the purchasing of bulk items.

If you can not deliver your donation you can contact Amy Leahy at 410-279-9331 or email ahleahy5@verizon.net.
