Home Depot Gives Holy Grounds $15K Makeover

Crews were hard at work Wednesday remodeling the Severna Park Community Center's Holy Grounds building.

Home Depot workers and volunteers were hard at work Wednesday giving Holy Grounds the much-needed makeover it deserves.

When Home Depot store manager Laura Gibson and her associates first heard about the Severna Park Community Center’s Holy Grounds, she knew it was project they had to be involved in.

“We always look for community organizations we can help, and a lot of our associates are in the area. We didn’t have to twist any arms to get them out here to help,” Gibson said. “The building was a challenge, but it was right up our alley.”

“Home Depot believes in helping the community,” said Steve Allen, operations manager. “It’s amazing how many people this building helps. It benefits everyone from kids to the elderly.”

Community center Executive Director Jennie Boden has been overwhelmed by Home Depot’s kindness. She said they have completely taken charge of work that needs to be done, including providing a new sink, refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher.

“We are really overwhelmed with their generosity and sprit,” Boden said. “I told them they have friends for life. We try to build a sense of community here so it is great when that grows to other businesses.”

Gibson said that while she knew the Home Depot on Mountain Road had a connection to the SPCC, she was surprised by how many connections she became aware of during the remodel.

Holy Grounds offers a home for summer camps, weight management meetings, AA meetings and more.

“It is a great space, but it really needed work,” Boden said. “Our board has been overwhelmed by all this. One of our members almost cried she was so happy. It is hard for me to find the words to describe how grateful I am.”
