Holy Grounds Ready for Home Depot Makeover

The Severna Park Community Center's youth building will get a complete remodel thanks to Home Depot.

When Severna Park Community Center Executive Director Jennie Boden first set out to spruce up Holy Grounds she was only looking to make a few enhancements to the kitchen area.

"I originally called Home Depot asking for help with the countertops and cabinets and right away they asked me to come down to talk,” Boden said.

Boden arrived at the Home Depot in Glen Burnie for a meeting with a manager. After discussing what they wanted, the manager and his team paid an immediate visit to Holy Grounds—and inspiration struck.

“They came down to see the space and just decided they needed to do a complete remodel,” Boden said. “The Home Depot staff took over in a beautiful way.”

Thanks to Home Depot Heroes Days, Holy Grounds will get new paint, floors, cabinets and counter tops, in addition to a new refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and sink.

The entire project will be done March 12-14 and all Home Depot needs is some volunteers to help with painting and sanding.

“We’re just so excited,” Boden said.

According to Marion Wear, assistant executive director of the Severna Park Community Center, Holy Grounds was originally built in 1937 and was the first Catholic Church in Severna Park. It received its last major remodel in 1995 from Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church community members. Bbut since then, it has had only a few repairs, which is why the building is in need of a fix-up.

Today, the community center uses the building as a youth center, but Boden said a large variety of groups uses Holy Grounds every day. She hopes the remodel makes the building an even nicer home to many local organizations.

“The staff and board here feel responsible for this space,” Boden said. “It is so old and historic and we want to take care of it. That’s why this whole thing is so amazing.”
