Community Center Marks Opening of New Fitness Center

The Severna Park Community Center hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new fitness center on Thursday.

The Severna Park Community Center (SPCC) held a ribbon cutting Thursday night to unveil a new $60,000 fitness center.

The center replaced the previous fitness and lounge area with new state-of-the-art equipment including an exercise machine for people in wheelchairs.

“Most people didn’t even know we had a weight room before,” said SPCC Executive Director Jennie Boden. “That space was not being put to use and now this answers the needs of the public who said we needed cardio.”

The fitness center now has several new elliptical machines, treadmills, bikes and a variety of weight room equipment.

Funds for the $60,000 project were raised at various events including the SPCC’s annual gala, the Shape Up Severna Park 5K, the Heroes of Tomorrow program and individual contributions.

Matt Troggler with EnerGY Fitness and Wellness designed the fitness center and had the honor of cutting the ribbon Thursday night. Troggler said the goal of the redesign was to better utilize the space.

“In any space you want to create an environment that will enhance a workout,” Troggler said. “You want to make the space inviting so that it will attract more people. This center has something for everyone.”

The cardio machines at the center overlook the pool and basketball courts, which allows gym-goers an active view while they are working out. Boden said the center gives parents who drop their kids off at swim practice the opportunity to exercise why they wait for them.

“A lot of our constituents have been asking for this,” Boden said. “We are not trying to compete with a major gym or anything like that. We are just trying to broaden out services for people who already call us home.”

Passes for the new fitness center are $15.99 a month and can be purchased at the Severna Park Community Center.
