Top 5 Business Stories from October

Here is a rundown of the top business stories from the last month.

Severna Park is full of small businesses that are making a big impact on the community.

Here is a roundup of the top business stories featured on Patch during the month of October (in no particular order).

1. Local Artist Paints ‘Off the Wall’
Severna Park painter and artist Jodi Roberts makes a living painting murals and turning other people’s trash into works of art.

2. What’s Going On with the Old KFC?

A Chick-fil-A is set to fill the vacant KFC building, but it is still in the preliminary stages. Rosanne Zimmerman, with Anne Arundel County Planning and Zoning, said Chick-fil-A representatives are working to address concerns with Leelyn Drive.

3. Breakfast Shoppe Fundraiser Inspires Monster Sandwich
The Breakfast Shoppe is challenging customers to take on a super sandwich for a charitable cause. This effort is part of The Breakfast Shoppe’s annual fundraising drive with proceeds from this year’s gigantic sandwich benefiting Ava Claire Conklin of Elkridge, who was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor last year.

4. Risking It All for Split Ends
Split Ends Salon co-owner Jennifer Hardison left her 9-to-5 job working PR for the Orioles in 2000, and decided to open a hair salon with her sister—something she had no background doing.

Twelve years later, Split Ends is one of the most popular hair salons in Severna Park.

5. Olde Tyme Barber Shop Showcases Community Achievement
You don’t need to talk to Olde Tyme Barber Shop owner Brian Mears to know how much he cares for his customers and the kids in Severna Park—it is apparent on the walls.

The local barbershop, which begins its 16th year in business on Nov. 1, recently remodeled the store to include hundreds of photos featuring more than 300 local athletes.
