Photos: Breakfast Shoppe Celebrates ‘Ava Conklin Day’

The local restaurant raised funds for an Elkridge girl who was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor.

The Breakfast Shoppe celebrated "Ava Conklin Day" on Saturday, which honored an Elkridge girl who has been at the center of their recent fundraising efforts. The event featured cake, TV interviews and a check for the family.

In October, the Breakfast Shoppe teamed up with WBAL-TV meteorologist Tony Pann to create a monster sandwich—the Category 3 Tony Chicken and Waffle 'PANN'wich. Those who attempted to eat the sandwich made donations to Ava, who was recently diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor.

The local restaurant celebrated Ava on Saturday and according to owner Kyle Algaze, The Breakfast Shoppe raised $6,366 over the span of 2-and-a-half months for Ava and her family.

"It was a huge success," Algaze said. "Ava's entire family came down to the restaurant and we presented the check."

After being diagnosed with a brain tumor, Ava then acquired meningitis and had a series of strokes while she was in a coma. More than a year later, Ava is out of the hospital and attending school, but she has not fully regained the ability to walk or talk yet. The money raised for the family will help with Ava's medical needs.

Charm City Cakes made a cake replica of the famous sandwich for ‘Ava Conklin Day," and WBAL-TV filmed the celebration.

"It was just a wonderful day for an inspirational young lady," Algaze said.
