Maine Cottage Completes Move to Annapolis

Maine Cottage, a coastal living furniture store, has left its Severna Park home and opened the doors to its new location at 209 West St. in Annapolis.

The store moved to downtown from its previous location on Evergreen Road to increase exposure and expand the store's brand, said owner Kevin Russell.

He pointed to a "color bar" in the new showroom where 60 paint swatches will hang on the wall next to an array of fabric swatches.

"The designers will be able to sit down with the client at the bar and actually create their own spaces," Russell said. "We just did not have the room to do this in our old location."

Russell started the business, then known as Russell & Mackenna, in his garage in Severna Park 10 years ago "just building small things around the house, and it kept growing from there."

He bought the rights to Maine Cottage in 2010, and the business quickly outgrew its 500-square-foot location. The West Street store has a 2,000- square-foot showroom and additional office space on the second and third floors.

Store manager Karyn Hutson joked that customers will get to see about 90 percent more inventory in the West Street location.

"I can look at the catalogue, but to be able to touch and feel the product is amazing," Hutson said. "You can actually see the quality."

The company specializes in bright colors, airy fabrics and a relaxed decor for people looking to furnish beach houses and second homes. The furniture products range in price from $1,200 to $4,000.

The new location also has enough space for Maine Cottage to start selling accessories, Hutson said. Customers can buy candles, pillows and dishes at the West Street location.

"They may not be able to afford a piece of furniture, but they can still walk away with a small piece of the lifestyle," Hutson said.

Maine Cottage is one in a series of construction projects headed by Anne Arundel County and the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp. to rejuvenate the city's West Street corridor.

"We're really excited to help revitalize this area," Hutson said. "We're hoping with all the vacant spaces that it will entice some other retailers to check it out and join."

To celebrate the move, the store is raffling off three custom-built beach cruisers. Customers can pick up entry forms at the store or participating restaurants around Annapolis from now until Dec. 14.

Maine Cottage is open Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
