Kick-It For Cancer with First Class Martial Arts

The local business will raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital with a cardio kickboxing marathon.

First Class Martial Arts in Severna Park is kicking-it to cancer with a cardio kickboxing marathon that will raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The martial arts studio will host Kick-It For Cancer Kids from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 4. Instructor James Yoon said the participants hope to raise $3,000 for St. Jude during the event.

“We wanted to do a charity event that involved health and fitness as well as working with kids because we are children-oriented here—that’s how we came up with St. Jude,” Yoon said.

To take part in Kick-It For Cancer Kids, participants need to get sponsors, or make donations themselves to St. Jude. The event will consist of an hour of demonstration from First Class Martial Arts students, and then two hours of cardio kickboxing.

Certified personal trainer Tara Meyer will teach the kickboxing part of the event. Meyer, a Pasadena resident, has been teaching kickboxing for more than 12 years.

“None of my kids have ever needed St. Jude, but having four kids it seems like it is a cause that is important,” Meyer said. “As a mother of four kids, I wouldn’t be able to afford care if God forbid something like that happened. I think it is very important to take care of the children especially.”

Yoon said that participants can be of any age and don’t have to do cardio kickboxing for the full two hours—they can take breaks and continue for as long as they like.
