ALS is a progressive neuromuscular disease that occurs when motor nerve cells cease to function and die. There are 30,000 people living with ALS in the United States at any one time. Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with the disease and every 90 minutes someone passes away from ALS. In most cases a person’s mind remains sharp and alert; however, voluntary muscle control becomes completely lost, often resulting in total paralysis and the inability to speak. The average life expectancy for someone living with ALS is two to five years after diagnosis. There is currently no known cause, cure, or means of prevention.

BGR The Burger Joint selected the ALS Association – DC/MD/VA Chapter as the beneficiary of the anniversary event because owner Stacy Person’s mother succumbed to the disease in 1987. Mark Bucher, corporate owner of BGR, will be the guest chef on WBAL on June 16th demonstrating various grilling techniques and promoting the anniversary event. BGR The Burger Joint is owned and operated by the Person and Canova families under the corporate name of Topburger, LLC. The Columbia location shares the corporate mission of producing the 'best burgers you've ever had' over and over by using the freshest, ripest, most sensational ingredients every time.

Donations from the event are funneled immediately into ALS- specific research and programs that are used every day by PALS. The ALS Association – DC/MD/VA Chapter provides services and support to over 510 patients within the region. These services include assistive technology devices, social worker visits, medical equipment loan closet, transportation grants, respite care grants and many other services. All of the Chapter’s services are provided free of charge to the families through generous donations and events.

The mission of the ALS Association is to improve the quality of life for PALS in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia while raising public awareness and support for finding a cure. The DC/MD/VA Chapter is based in Rockville, MD with an office in Richmond, VA.
