Despite Many Hurdles, Millersville Crematory Earns Permit

Maryland Cremation Services is located Millersville.

Despite a heated battle with neighboring communities for nearly two years, Maryland Cremation Services was finally granted a permit that allows them to install a crematory machine at its Millersville location.

Owner Dorota Marshall said the permit came July 24, and was a moment she has been waiting for.

“I am relieved and I am quite excited to finally move on, and hopefully provide a very valuable service to the community and residents in Maryland,” Marshall said.

The installation of the crematory machine has drawn a lot of criticism from the local community. Located at 408 Headquarters Dr., Maryland Cremation Services sits behind a community of about 800 homes and an elementary school—in the Shipley’s Retreat and Shipley’s Choice area.

At a meeting in May 2012, many Shipley’s residents expressed concerns that the crematory could emit emissions into the area that would be dangerous to the community members.

According to an article in The Baltimore Sun, the Maryland Department of the Environment issued an air permit in July.

“I had a lot of my customers ask me about the battle and how it was going, and cheering me on and wishing me good look,” Marshall said. “Hopefully I will be able to provide a service they need.”

Since the permit was only issued last week, Marshall said it’s too soon to know when the installation will take place and exactly when they will be up and running.
