County Appeals Board Favors Millersville Crematory

The Board of Appeals Ruled in favor of plumbing and building permits on Friday for Maryland Cremation Services.

Dorota Marshall, the owner of Maryland Cremation Services and a licensed mortician and funeral director, won her appeal on Friday from the county Board of Appeals to move forward with the plumbing and remodeling of a Millersville building that will eventually house a funeral establishment, including a crematory.

The appeal determined all of the requirements were met and that the property is located on an "arterial road" or Headquarters Drive, off of Veteran's Highway.

Maryland Cremation Services had its building and sewer permits appealed by nearby Shipley's Choice residents, who have fought against the business for nearly a year. The first , held in May, brought in hundreds of residents, a heated debate with the Marshalls, followed by The association appealed the plumbing and building permits that had already been issued by the county. According to the court document, Marshall has already spent upwards of $100,000 on the remodel with more earmarked for the rebuild. Marshall's crematory would join others operating in the county: Harman Funeral Services, Donaldson Funeral Home, Kalas Funeral Home and Ardent Cremation.

"...After watching them sleep through five sessions of testimony it is a wonder that they were able to even have an opinion, let alone render one," wrote Shipley's resident Bill Mitchell in a response email to Patch.
