Big Bean Rewards Organ Donors with Free Coffee

The coffee shop's annual Recycle Yourself day will be held Monday.

The Big Bean, a Severna Park coffee shop, is honoring Earth Day with its annual Recycle Yourself day and thanking registered organ donors with a free 12-ounce cup of coffee.

After having a family member experience the organ donation process first-hand, Big Bean owner Deb Hoffman is passionate about the issue.

“Sixteen years ago, I had a family member who was in need of an organ,” Hoffman said. “During that time, while navigating through the organ transplantation experience, I learned that the need for organs far exceeds the availability. That fact still remains the same today.”

The Big Bean has been hosting Recycle Yourself on Earth Day for about 10 years. In order to claim your free coffee on Monday, patrons must present a drivers license that indicates they are a registered donor.

“While it is a personal decision to sign an organ donation card, those who are willing, provide an indescribable gift that can change the life of a recipient, as well as their friends and families,” Hoffman said.
