The Inward Path: Meditation and Self-Study in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

These talks (spread over two evenings) will aim at explaining the philosophy behind meditation as characterized in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the oldest text on meditation in the Indian tradition.
The meetings are not intended to provide a forum for actually practicing meditation, but rather to explain and discuss what meditation is, why it is possible, what characterizes real meditation (as distinguished from self-hypnosis), what are the kinds of practices that can be employed by the practitioner, what are the pitfalls, and how it is related to ethics and everyday human activities. These meetings should be helpful and meaningful to anyone who has an interest in learning more about meditation.
The talks will be held on two nights, and the cost of $20 will cover the cost of the book, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

SPEAKER VITAE: The lecturer for The Inward Path: Meditation and Self-Study in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, is John Powers, the founder of Theosophy Trust and Theosophy Library Online, Chair of the Editorial Board of Theosophy Trust, and the Editor of Theosophy Trust Books. Mr. Powers was educated at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in ancient Greek philosophy, contemporary philosophy, Eastern philosophy, and Sanskrit.
The talk on The Inward Path is based upon the most recent publication from Theosophy Trust Books, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, with translation of the Yoga Aphorisms by Prof. Raghavan N. Iyer, M.A., D.Phil. (Oxon), as well as numerous insightful articles on their practical application and their place in the ancient Indian tradition.
