Winter Storm Timeline: Severna Park Could Receive 9 Inches of Snow

A breakdown of the next 24 hours as a winter storm hits the region.

And so it begins. Tuesday morning snow started to fall in parts of Anne Arundel County around 10:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning through noon on Wednesday. The weather service predicts about 4 to 8 inches of snow may fall in Severna Park during the day, and an additional inch to fall during evening hours. 

Anne Arundel County County Public Schools announced Monday night that schools would be closed for the day Tuesday. The Anne Arundel County government is open, with liberal leave in effect for employees. However, Tuesday evening's county council meeting has been canceled. 

The National Weather Service also issued a wind chill advisory from 6 p.m. until noon on Wednesday. Blustery conditions are expected to follow the snow storm, with wind chill values dropping as low as -15 on Wednesday.

Storm Timeline:

8 a.m. Tuesday: 
All Anne Arundel County police stations are open as warming centers. Contact the Emergency Operations Center at 410-222-0600 for more information.

10:30 a.m. Tuesday: Snow begins and will accumulate throughout the day as the temperature falls from a high of 30 to about 6 degrees, according to the forecast. Between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. the area is expected to get between 4 and 8 inches of snow.

Midday Tuesday: The heaviest snow is expected to fall during this time. Visibility may be less than a half mile. The National Weather Service reports: "Traveling will become dangerous today."

9 p.m. Tuesday: Snow should stop and high winds will begin to strike the area, with gusts of 40 mph in the evening. Up to an inch of snow is predicted to fall overnight. The weather service warns if you must travel outside, to wear a hat and gloves as hypothermia and frostbite can occur quickly. The nighttime low is predicted to be 6 degrees, with wind chill values ranging from -5 to -15 degrees. 

Wednesday morning: Winds will begin to taper off at this time. Wind speeds are predicted to drop to around 11 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. A high near 18 degrees is predicted with wind chill values as low as 12 degrees below zero.

Wednesday night: Wind chill values are expected to drop to as low as -5, while the low is predicted to be around 9 degrees.

Rest of the week: Bitter temperatures will continue until Saturday. Thursday is expected to reach a high of 19, with a low of 4 at night. Friday is predicted to be sunny with a high near 16 and low around 14. On Saturday temperatures will a freezing 32 degrees.
