Seniors Offer Warm Sendoff at Arnold Senior Center

Senior Activity Assistant Director Claire Kelly says goodbye as county budget cuts eliminate her position.

It was a day of many emotions at the on Wednesday as Assistant Director Claire Kelly was given a fond sendoff filled with memories, gifts, and good wishes.

Kelly’s position at the Senior Center was eliminated as part of cost cutting measures by the county. Her responsibilities, including programming and public relations, are to be assumed by Suzie Antkowiak, the center’s director.

Before the official reception celebrating her work with local seniors, Kelly was in a reflective mood, remembering all of the wonderful moments she has spent with her “friends.”

“I will miss the members so much,” said Kelly as she recalled all of the special trips and programs she had scheduled at the center over the last three years. “I think what I will most is their stories. They have shared so many life lessons with me.”

Though many experiences stood out in her mind, one of the fondest was the , an inspiration to Kelly every day.

“I am so impressed with her energy, her spirit, and her cheerfulness,” said Kelly.

As the reception began, the center’s gathering room was packed with senior members, staff, and well-wishers.

Senior Mary Ladas said Kelly was a natural at her job. “She fits right in with people; she is so friendly,” said Ladas.

“She has a lot of friends here; she does good work,” pronounced senior volunteer and Kelly’s friend Dorothy Dempsey.

Throughout the reception, Senior Center members continued to travel to the microphone, giving Kelly thanks and good wishes for the future.

Kelly’s fiancé Keith Oliver, a retired Marine, told the crowd that despite his history, he had to prove himself to members before they approved of him. “It took a while for them to say I was suitable for Claire,” said Oliver with a laugh. “I know I have broken some hearts here.”

Kelly leaves the center on Friday. She has been provided a new position as a trainer for the county’s Department of Public Works. 

“I hear I will be wearing hard hats and steel-toed boots,” said Kelly, ready to take on the challenges of a new job.

“I am sorry I have to leave my friends here,” said Kelly. “But this is an opportunity for new beginnings."
